Egad I hate lawyers

A few weeks ago, I received a waiver which I agreed to sign over the phone. When it arrives I notice that I was named the “son” of the “decedent.” After a call to the lawyer, a corrected copy arrives via email for me to print out.

Then I notice the document had me living in the county and state where the “son” of the “decedent” lives. After consulting with the lawyer AGAIN, I correct the document myself before going notary hunting.

Fine. All done, right? Nope.

In comes a new waiver to sign. I agree to it as well, sign it, and send it back (fortunately certified with return receipt) within 5 business days (4 considering the holiday). That’s not too shabby I think.

But on 2 June, I get a rather curt, lawyerly email hinting that I haven’t sent it. I respond that I sent it out 29 May and I suspected it would therefore arrive any day now.

What I didn’t do is look up the return receipt on the postal service’s website. I just did. And guess what they attempted to deliver to the lawyer’s office 7 hours *prior* to her curt note to me. Give up? Could it be…. A WAIVER? And as best as I can tell, it’s living at the post office because I don’t have my signed receipt yet. I’m sure this is somehow my fault….

Holy cow. I can’t wait to see what the next missive brings….

(Shouldn’t strike me as amusing, and we definitely need to fix it, but I can just picture the poor processor throwing up its little metallic hands and screaming ‘enough already!’)

Okay, so perhaps “normal” is not the most accurate label which can be applied to me. :-) Status quo then? Regardless…. The past seems to have found its way back to where it belongs. Hopefully there will be no more surprises on that front and I can get back to fretting about this course which I don’t want to teach. :-)

What bothers me the most...

… is not that I haven’t seen nor heard from him in 25 years

… nor that the way he unceremoniously reappeared in my life is through a letter sent to my place of employment regarding my apparent relationship to “the decedent”

… nor that I’ve since found out in an almost equally unceremonious fashion that he died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head (although that’s been good for a few nightmares)

… nor that the past won’t stay put where it belongs.

To be honest, I can’t quite put my finger on what bothers me the most about all of this. But I hope I work it out soon and move on. I think I will. But just when I think I have, I’m caught off guard.

What a week….
